When a file is expired, clients can still view the file but can no longer take actions like payments or document signing. This is particularly useful if project timelines or terms change. Note that archiving a project will automatically expire all files within the project.
Set an expiration date in advance
You can set a smart file's expiration date when creating a file template or sending a file to a client:
While working on a smart file, select the gear icon to open the file's configure settings
In the "FILE EXPIRATION" section, turn on Turn on file expiration
Click the pencil icon to edit the expiration message
Set when the file will expire
Select Display expiration date in file if you want the expiration date to be visible to the file recipients
Select SAVE & EXIT
Manually expire
Manual expiration is particularly useful for canceling active files. You can manually expire a smart file any time, while it's still in progress. Note that completed smart files can't be expired. This restriction is in place because completed files are considered final.
Find and open the file you want to expire
Select the gear icon to open the file's configure settings
In the "FILE EXPIRATION" section, select EXPIRE NOW
Select SAVE & EXIT
What happens when a file is expired
When you expire a file:
Clients can still view the file
Clients can no longer take actions like payments or document signing
Any payment schedule will be paused, and this will prevent further payments from being made through the file.
Clients will no longer receive SMS or email updates/reminders about the file
