Set an expiration window for a smart file

Use expiration windows to prompt your clients to take action or manually expire a smart file when you're done with it.

Updated over a week ago

To ensure prompt client attention, you can set a smart file to expire after a specific time, or manually expire it when needed. Once expired, the client can still view the smart file but cannot take any actions like answering questions, signing contracts, or making payments.

Set a smart file's expiration window in advance

You can set a smart file's expiration window when creating a file template or sending a file to a client.

  1. While working on a smart file, select the gear icon from the top menu

  2. In the File Exploration section, toggle on Turn on file exploration

  3. Edit the expiration message

  4. Set when this file will expire

    1. If you're working on a template, the expiration window will also start based on your choice here

  5. Select whether you want the expiration date to appear on the file

Manually expire a smart file

You can manually expire a smart file at any time, while it's still in progress. Completed smart files cannot be expired.

  1. From the top navigation menu, select the search bar to find the smart file you want to expire

    1. You can also select Projects > select that project that holds the file you want to expire > select the file you want to expire

  2. Select the gear icon from the top menu

  3. In the File Expiration section, select Expire Now

  4. Select Save & Exit
