Adding a client file upload block

How to let clients upload images and PDFs directly through your smart files

Updated over a week ago

To reduce back-and-forth and keep all of your project materials in one place, you can include a special type of question–file upload–in your smart files. When added, this block lets clients upload images and PDFs directly through the file. Any uploaded attachments will be available in the file summary view.

Add a file upload block

Before you get started: Make sure you’re working in a smart file! Learn how to create smart files here.

1. First, choose how you’d like to get started building:

  • To add a new file upload block to an existing page: Find the existing page where you want the new block with a file upload to go > click the large plus (+) button

  • To add a file upload block to a new page: Create a new page, OR

  • To add a file upload section to an existing block: Locate the existing block that you’d like to add a file upload section to > click the small plus (+) button

2. Select File upload.

3. Next, select Start editing from the right-side toolbar, OR just click into the new file upload section to get started customizing it immediately.

Customize the file upload block

1. Rename the block by selecting the area above where your client will upload the file.

2. Enter text to prompt your clients to upload a specific type of image or PDF, add more details about what they should attach, or anything else.

3. Toggle File upload is required ON or OFF

a. Toggling this option ON means clients will not be able to proceed through the file until they upload an attachment

b. Toggling this option OFF means clients can upload a file, but they won’t be required to

4. You can always customize the design of any content block by clicking the block container (outside of the boxes that hold the block elements), which will open the block settings. Then:

  • Adjust the columns layout

  • Select a background color

  • Adjust the background color opacity

  • Select a background image from your Library, or upload a new one

  • Customize the content width (S, M, L, or 100%)

  • Adjust the column spacing by using the scroll bar

  • Change the top & bottom padding (S, M, L, or Custom)

Client experience with file upload

When a client receives a smart file that includes a file upload block, they’ll be able to drag and drop, or select files from their device, to add.

📣 Note

Clients can upload up to 10 attachments per file upload block. The attachments can be JPG, PNG, PDF, or GIF files, with a maximum file size of 15MB.

If file upload is set to required, clients will not be able to proceed to the next page of the file until they upload file(s).

Once the client has uploaded file(s), they can see what they attached at any time by re-accessing the file and locating the page with the file upload block.

View an uploaded attachment

How do I view and download the files a client has uploaded, you might ask? In the file summary view, you’ll see all the files your client has uploaded. To preview an attachment, simply click on its name. You can download from within the preview, or you can hover on the thumbnail of the attachment and click the download icon!

📚 Tip

To get to the file summary view, find the file in question and click to open. You can search using the search bar, or locate the file from within the project’s Activity or Files tabs.

On the client side: Once the client has uploaded file(s), they can see what they attached at any time by re-accessing the file and locating the page with the file upload block.
