How to copy and paste your content, designs, and actions within and between smart files

Updated over a week ago

Your standard copying and pasting options go a little further with smart files. With this enhanced builder, you can copy entire blocks of content and actions, like contracts and invoices; as well as individual elements in content blocks: text, images, questions, videos, and dividers. Then, you can paste into any spot, simplifying and streamlining your file-building process!

Copying & pasting blocks

Remember, blocks are groups of elements or a place for a specific client action–like a header, questionnaire, contract, or invoice. The copy-paste tool allows you to quickly copy a block and paste it within the same smart file, or an entirely new one.

To copy a block:

1. Click the block container (outside of the boxes that hold the elements) to highlight the block.

2. From here, copy the block. You can:

  • Use a keyboard shortcut: Command + C (Mac) or Control + C (PC)

  • Select the three-dot icon to the top right of the block, then click Copy block

To paste a block:

1. First, copy a block.

2. Locate the page of the smart file that you would like to paste the block into.

3. Paste the block into the page. You can:

  • Use a keyboard shortcut: Command + P (Mac) or Control + P (PC)

  • Click the block container (outside of the boxes that hold the elements) of any block on the page, select the three-dot icon, then click Paste block

HoneyBook Tip: If you choose to paste a block while another block is selected, the copied block will be pasted directly below what’s selected. If nothing is selected, the copied block will be pasted at the top of the page.

Copying & pasting elements

Elements are the smaller pieces of blocks. Once you’ve copied an element, you can paste it within the same block, the same smart file, or into an entirely different smart file. You’ll be able to easily repeat content without having to redo the work.

PLEASE NOTE: At this time, only elements of content blocks can be copied and pasted: text, images, questions, videos, and dividers. Elements that are part of action blocks (services, payment schedules) cannot be copy-pasted. However, you can still pull entire action blocks into new places using reusable blocks and pages, then delete any elements you don't need.

To copy an element:

1. Click the element container (the box outside of the specific element) to highlight the element.

2. Copy the element by using a keyboard shortcut: Command + C (Mac) or Control + C (PC).

To paste an element:

1. First, copy an element.

2. Locate the page of the smart file that you would like to paste the element into.

3. Paste the element into the page by using a keyboard shortcut: Command + P (Mac) or Control + P (PC).

  • HoneyBook Tip: If you choose to paste an element while a block is selected, the copied element will be pasted directly below the block that is selected, in a new block of its own. If you paste while another element is selected, the copied element will be pasted into the same block as the element that’s selected. Alternatively, if nothing is selected, the copied element will be pasted at the top of the page, in a new block of its own.

Once you’ve copied and pasted, you can always:

  • Add more content to a block by hovering over an element, and clicking the Plus (+) button above or below it

  • Rearrange or delete an element by clicking the element itself to display the move or trash can icons

  • Rearrange or delete entire blocks by clicking the block container (outside of the boxes that hold the elements) to display the move or trash can icons

  • Add background colors, images, or further customize the formatting of a block by clicking the block container (outside of the boxes that hold the elements)
