Updated over a week ago

For enhanced customization, add smart fields to the text blocks in your files. These fields can be tied to key client, project, and business details, so that information auto-populates effortlessly.

We’ll cover how to add a smart field to a file, plus what your clients see once you share the file, below.

Add a smart field

To add a smart field to a file:

📣 Note

At this time, smart fields are available only in smart files. Smart fields cannot be added to contact forms or lead forms.

2. Locate the existing text block that you’d like to add a smart field to, or add a new text block.

3. Place and click your cursor where you’d like to insert the smart field.

4. Either:

  • Hit the { key, then select a smart field from the drop-down;

  • Select a smart field from the Insert a smart field drop-down in the settings sidebar; OR

  • Select a suggested smart field from the settings sidebar

The smart field should now be added to your file! If you’re working in a project and there’s an associated value for the field, the field will auto-populate with the corresponding information. If you’re working on a template, or in a project and there’s no associated value for the field yet, the field type will show with brackets around it.

📚 Tip

Smart fields pull project-specific details into your text blocks, and the field values will appear to your clients as plain text. Clients cannot edit smart fields in text blocks. Learn more about the client experience below.

If you're looking to have your client enter information into a file, use a question block or consider adding smart fields to a contract block.

Client experience

Once you share a file with smart fields in a text block(s), clients will see the associated information for any smart fields that have a value attached to them. For smart fields that do not have a value attached, clients will see a blank space.

Smart fields in text blocks appear to clients as plain text, styled according to the settings you set. (In comparison, smart fields in contract blocks appear to clients as actual fields.)
