To customize your files, add smart fields to the text blocks. These fields can be linked to important client, project, and business information to automatically pull their info into the text block.

Note

Using smart fields in contract blocks is another option, with a different way of adding them. Learn about using smart fields in contract blocks.

Add a smart field to a text block

  1. While building your smart file, select the text block you'll add a smart field to (or create a new one)

  2. Select exactly where you want to add the smart field

  3. Type " { " from your keyboard > do either of these:

    1. Select a suggested smart field you want to add from the settings sidebar

    2. Select the Insert a smart field sidebar > select which smart field you want to add

From here, the smart field will get added to the text block. If you’re working in a project and there’s an associated value for the field, the field will auto-populate with the corresponding information.

If you’re working on a template, or in a project and there’s no associated value for the field yet, the field type will show with brackets around it.

A client's experience with smart fields

When you share a file with smart fields in a text block, clients will see any associated information for smart fields with a value, and a blank space for smart fields without a value.

Smart fields in text blocks are displayed as plain text, according to the chosen settings. In contrast, smart fields in contract blocks are displayed as fields to clients.
