How to automatically trigger actions leading up to a project date

All about building this logic in the new automations builder

Updated this week

Automations 2.0 comes with a new framework for building your automated steps. If you have a step that always occurs a set number of days before a project date, here's how to set that up.

Example use case: You want to send an email 10 days before the project date.

📚 Tip

This article covers Automations 2.0, HoneyBook's new automations builder with conditional logic, 3rd party app integrations, and more. Learn more about Automations 2.0 here.

Automations 2.0

Old automations builder

You’ll want to create a new automation with the trigger: Project date.

Automations 2.0 run step by step in order. Since X days before project date is the criteria that causes a specific action to occur, it is considered a trigger and needs to be broken out into a unique automation so all other steps happen as planned.

You can still set your automation up so that it runs only for specific project types (see step 5b).

“X days before project date” was incorporated into an automation step itself

  1. From your navigation menu, click Automations

  2. Select Create Automation

  3. Click into the title field to the top left of your screen to rename the automation template

  4. Click Set a trigger in the sidebar

  5. From the sidebar, select Project date

    1. Set the when: X minutes, hours days, weeks, or month before or after the project date

    2. Select the project type(s) for which the trigger will apply, or all

  6. Continue building out your automation with the action that occurs when the trigger is met

Here’s what this looks like in Automations 2.0:
